Grapeseed oil is a recent hit in the market. Scientific research found that the consumption of grapeseed oil can help increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL, the good cholesterol), reduce total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL, the bad cholesterol). These factors are beneficial to heart health. In addition, grapeseed oil is a great source of antioxidants such as vitamin E and oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), which can reduce free radical damage done to our body. However, because OPCs are insoluble in the oil, grapeseed oil may contain less OPCs than other grape products such as fresh grapes, grape juice, and red wine. Although grapeseed oil is a good source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, overconsumption can lead to weight gain since 1g of grapeseed oil contains 9 kcal. Grapeseed oil has a higher smoke point than olive oils. It is more suitable for high-temperature cooking while olive oils are good for making of salads.
Grapeseed oil is commonly found in cosmetics due to its antioxidants vitamins E, C and OPCs content. Also it can reduce the formation of dark pigments, promoting healthy skin. There are many kinds of nutritional supplements of grape products. Supplement overdose can be dangerous and ingredients of these supplements vary from one product to another, it is necessary to consult a registered dietitian before buying and using these supplements.
