Bupa pays higher benefits because our surgical benefit is paid per operation rather than per disability. Here is an example that explains why.
Imagine you have undergone two operations related to the same disability or illness. The surgical benefit limit and surgical expenses are as follows:
Surgical benefit limit: HK$50,000
Surgical expenses:
First operation - HK$50,000
Second operation – HK$50,000
Benefit payable by Bupa:
Since surgical claims are paid per operation, your reimbursement is HK$50,000 x 2, ie HK$100,000.
Other plans that pay per disability benefit:
If surgical claims are paid per disability, the second operation is considered as a consequence of the same disability and expenses related to it are paid out from the same benefit limit. Since the available benefit is depleted by the first operation, the total benefit payable for two operations is only HK$50,000.
