Understand medical insurance coverage and benefits to ensure the best protection
Illness may not be as far away as you think, and comprehensive medical insurance can help you focus on treatment and rehabilitation without worrying about medical expenses. However, insurance claims are settled differently under different schemes. It’s important to understand the details of the protection, claims and benefit limits before buying an insurance scheme to make sure you get the best coverage.
Taking the VHIS Standard Plan as an example, the coverage is divided into a number of items, such as room and board, attending doctor’s visit fee, surgeon’s fee, miscellaneous expenses and so on. Each benefit item has its own coverage limit. Standard Plans that only offer terms and benefits that meet the minimum VHIS requirements may not provide enough coverage for all your medical expenses. With this type of plan, you may need to pay out-of-pocket upon discharge from hospital. On the other hand, VHIS Flexi Plans offer additional benefits on top of the Standard Plan, such as a wider range of benefit items and a higher coverage limit. Some Flexi Plans also provide a Full Cover Benefit, where there is no limit on each individual benefit item. As long as your total eligible medical expenses don’t exceed the annual maximum limit, they will be fully covered. You won’t need to worry about paying the difference if a particular medical expense exceeds the limit. Some Full Cover Benefit options also cover outpatient expenses before admission and after discharge from hospital for one-stop medical services.
With an annual benefit limit of up to HK$30 million, Bupa Hero VHIS Plan will fully cover all eligible cancer surgery expenses and treatments (e.g. chemotherapy or targeted therapy) and surgery expenses for other serious and common illnesses (e.g. stroke, kidney failure, cataract) in Asia, Australia and New Zealand. It also fully covers outpatient visits 30 days before and 90 days after hospitalisation (e.g. physiotherapy, follow-up consultations) with unlimited access. Policy holders can receive necessary treatments without any financial worries as they recover and return to good health.
